++ANSWERWhat is the ACT?

The ACT is an achievement test used by college and university admission offices to assess what you’ve learned in school and determine your readiness to tackle college-level material.

It is important to note, however, that the ACT is only one aspect of your college application. Admission representatives consider other components of your academic career, such as transcripts, letters of recommendation, and extracurricular activities.ANSWER++

++ANSWERHow is the ACT different from the SAT?

The ACT is shorter than the SAT, despite the fact that it has more sections. Combined, the four sections and optional writing sample on the ACT are shorter than the two sections that comprise the SAT. The SAT also places a greater scoring emphasis on math (50% of score), whereas the math section on the ACT only accounts for 25% of the total score. The ACT also offers an optional science section, allowing you to submit a STEM score to the schools of your choice.ANSWER++

++ANSWERWho administers the ACT?

The ACT Education Corporation creates and administers the ACT exam. (The SAT is administered by the College Board.)ANSWER++

++ANSWERHow do I register for the ACT?

You can register for the ACT after creating a MyACT account; this can be done at my.act.org. After creating your account, you will be asked to provide information about yourself, including the schools to which you would like your scores sent. You will be asked to upload a photo of yourself in order to finalize your registration and be granted access to your admission ticket. The admission ticket is required in order to sit for the exam.ANSWER++

++ANSWERWhat subjects are covered on the ACT?

The ACT consists of five sections, two of which are optional**:

·       English

·       Mathematics

·       Reading

·       Science (optional)

·       Writing (optional)

All but the writing section contain questions in multiple-choice format. The writing section requires you to compose a short essay in which you take a side on an issue.

**By fall 2025, the paper-and-pencil version of both the National and International ACT will include the choice to opt in or out of the science and writing portions of the exam. By spring of 2026, state and district ACT exams will also be optional for the writing and science sections.ANSWER++

++ANSWERHow is the ACT Administered?

The ACT can be taken either online or using pencil and paper. ANSWER++

++ANSWERWhere do I take the ACT?

The ACT is offered at a variety of test centers nationwide and around the world.ANSWER++

++ANSWERHow is the ACT scored?

You will receive one point for every correctly answered multiple-choice question. There is no penalty for incorrect answers. The number of correctly answered questions becomes your raw score, which is then scaled to a score from 1 to 36. Visit act.org for specific information about how scores, including those for the writing sample, are calculated. ANSWER++

++ANSWERWhen and how do I receive my ACT score?

Scores can be accessed through your MyACT account within 2 – 8 weeks from the date on which you sit for the exam.ANSWER++
