CCM

The Certified Case Manager (CCM) Exam is developed by the Commission for Case Manager Certification (CCMC) as part of its certification program for case managers. The CCM measures the skills necessary to excel as a case manager in a variety of health care settings.

To qualify for the CCM exam, you must have a current licensure in any health or human services discipline permitting independent assessment of a client in the United States or its territories. Instead of licensure, you may qualify if you have a bachelor’s or advanced degree in certain health or human services disciplines.

You must also have employment experience: either twelve months of case management experience under the supervision of a board-certified case manager, twelve months of experience supervising case managers, or twenty-four months of full-time case management experience. All experience must be obtained in the United States.

You must apply through the CCMC. After your application is accepted, you will receive an exam eligibility email with your testing number and instructions on how to register for the exam.

The CCM is administered at Prometric testing centers around the nation.

The CCM consists of 180 multiple-choice questions. You will have 3 hours to complete the test. Before the timed portion of the exam begins, you will take a brief tutorial. There are no scheduled breaks during the exam.

The CCM exam covers the five major domains of essential knowledge for case managers, corresponding to the Five Core Components of Case Management; Care Delivery and Reimbursement Methods, Psychosocial Concepts and Support Systems, Quality and Outcomes Evaluation and Measurements, Rehabilitation Concepts and Strategies, and Ethical, Legal, and Practice Standards.

The questions on the CCM are multiple-choice with four answer choices. The CCM has no guess penalty. That is, if you answer a question incorrectly, no points are deducted from your score; you simply do not get credit for that question. Therefore, you should always guess if you do not know the answer to a question.

Only 150 of the 180 questions are scored; thrity are unscored, or pretest questions. These questions are included by the CCMC to test their suitability for inclusion in future tests. You’ll have no way of knowing which questions are unscored, so treat every question like it counts.

Once you have completed your test, the computer you are working on will display your pass/fail score. You may print a hard copy of your score to take with you. You will receive your official results electronically four weeks after the end of the testing window. Remember, you may not use your CCM credentials until you have received your official results, even if you pass the test.

The CCM is a pass/fail test. The minimum passing scaled score is 500.

The number of correct answers needed to pass the exam will vary slightly depending on the questions included in your version of the test (i.e., if you took a version of the test with harder questions, the passing score will be lower). For security reasons, different versions of the test are administered every testing window. For most test takers, a passing score will be 105 questions answered correctly. However, this can range from 105 to 110 questions.

If you do not pass the CCM exam, you may register to take the exam again. If you fail the exam a second time, you will need to complete the full application process again before you can retest.
