The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) is administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). The exam assesses the knowledge and abilities needed to perform pharmacy technician work. By passing the PTCE, pharmacy technicians are nationally accredited and receive the title of a Certified Pharmacy Technician, or CPhT.ANSWER++

The PTCB is an organization for pharmacy technicians that provides certification to qualified candidates. The PTCB offers standardized pharmacy technician training, testing, and certification in all states.ANSWER++

To schedule a test, you must first get authorization from the PTCB showing you have met all the pre-qualifications. You have two pathways to meet these requirements.

  • Pathway 1: completion of a PTCB-recognized education or training program

  • Pathway 2: a minimum of 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technicianANSWER++

The PTCE is a computer-generated multiple-choice exam that contains 90 questions. Of the 90 questions, 80 are scored and 10 are unscored.ANSWER++

After the PTCB reviews and approves your application, you will receive an email with instructions for scheduling your exam.ANSWER++

When you finish the exam, you will receive an official result at the testing center. Your official result will appear in your PTCB account within three weeks. Within six weeks, you will be sent an official certificate and wallet card stating you are a Certified Pharmacy Technician.ANSWER++

The minimum passing score for the PTCE is 1400. The range of possible scaled scores is between 1000 and 1600.ANSWER++

Candidates who fail the PTCE must wait sixty days to apply for the second and third attempts, and six months for attempts thereafter. After four failed attempts, candidates must complete preparation activities and submit proof of completion to PTCB for review and approval before making additional attempts.ANSWER++

To keep your PTCB certification current, you will be required to recertify every two years.ANSWER++
